6.7.1 North American Digital TDM Hierarchy System

Basically, TDMs may be categorised into two categories. The first category carries multiplexer used in conjunction with digital computer system to join digital signals from various sources for TDM data transmission over a high-speed data line to digital computer. Multiplexers’ output bit rate is standardised to 1.2, 2.4, 3.6, 4.8, 7.2, 9.6, 14.4, 19.2, 28.8 b/s, 10 and 100 Mb/s. In the second category of TDM, TDM is used by common carrier such as the American Telephone and Telegraph (AT and T) Company, to combine several different-different sources and form high-speed digital TDM signal for data transmission over telephonice networks. Though the standards being employed by Japan and North America are different from the standards followed worldwide, firstly, AT&T has followed Japanese and North American standards, and other set of standard has been followed by CCITT under the support of International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
